Project Overview

From November 2020 to May 2022, Project Waterfall helped to fund the rebuild of the Hoa Trung Nursery School in Vietnam, with our partners the Costa Foundation.

Thanks to the money raised during UK Coffee Week 2020, Project Waterfall donated £16,000 to this project, bringing clean water and improved sanitation measures to up 250 children.

The rebuilding of the school means students are no longer using outdated facilities and crowded classrooms. Children within ethnic minorities are now also able to access education. Coffee farmers are no longer worried about the quality of their children’s education, meaning they have more time and energy to focus on providing for their families.

This project changed the lives of 250 children

healthier children

With clean water and proper sanitation at the nursery school, the children there are now at much less risk of developing water-borne diseases. This means that they can spend more time in school instead of at home sick, will have better concentration when at school, and will have an all-over better start to their education.

healthier teachers

With improved sanitation measures at school, the teachers themselves are able to concentrate on their jobs of providing a good quality education. They will spend less time sick at home, will be more comfortable in their place of work, and won’t have to worry about the water that they are drinking.

beter education

With the construction of new classrooms, kitchen, playground, wash blocks and more, the school can now be used how it’s supposed to be: for learning and having fun. With better facilities, the children can forget about dirt and disease, and their parents can drop them off knowing that they will be receiving the best education possible.

HOW WE DID THIS

Over 2 years, the money raised by Project Waterfall helped to fund the rebuild of Hoa Trung Nursery School, and the full construction of water and sanitation projects. This is what was built:

  • 6 classrooms with improved learning and teaching equipment

  • Block for administration, accounting and a staff meeting room

  • Multi-functional room for extra-curriculum activities, a space to eat lunch, and more

  • Kitchen with modern facilities so that the school chef can properly prepare lunch for all the children

  • 100m deep bored well and 8m high water tower with a concrete platform

  • Water refinery system that can process 500 litre/hour

  • Concrete drainage system around the school and a large septic tank

  • Gender-separated toilets for students and staff

  • New fencing, gates and playground for break times

Sustainability and education

Being exposed to the life-changing benefits of clean water and sanitation is something that no-one is ever too young to experience. The introduction of improved WASH projects to the Hoa Trung Nursery School creates a whole new generation who will grow up knowing what it’s like to have access to clean water. This will encourage the children at this school to demand access to clean water for the rest of their lives, and to never accept anything less.

As well as this, the children now have a better start to the rest of their education, which will in turn lead to better jobs and better futures. This will reduce poverty and break that vicious cycle of that lack of clean water causes.

Introducing clean water is always an investment.

the future

The school was handed-over to local authorities on 20th May 2022, with it officially welcoming children 3 days later. Below are some photographs from the handover celebration and ceremony.

We continue to have a partnership with the Costa Foundation, and look forward to future collaborations.
